Q: How do I know if I have an authentic DMC tool?

A: There are many copycat and counterfeit tools entering the market. Here are some steps on how to insure you are buying an authentic DMC product.


  • Avoid purchasing DMC products from unauthorized sources.

  • Avoid buying product on marketplaces such as, Alibaba and eBay.

  • Jonard Tools, JRready (Jiaxing Jingrui Instrument & Equipment Co., Ltd.), JRD Tools, IWISS Tools Co., Ltd. (ZHEJIANG IWISS ELECTRIC CO.,LTD) and Precise Tool (Cobranded tool with JR Ready) have been identified as a manufacturer/retailer of counterfeit versions of our tools.

  • Avoid purchasing items marked used or refurbished. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Look for the DMC cage code 11851 and Made In The USA engraved on the tool. Contact us if you have a question about purchasing one of our products.

Q: Does DMC sell 39029 contacts or insulated and uninsulated terminals?

A: We do not sell loose piece contacts or terminals. These may be provided in our Aerospace Maintenance Kits, but we do not sell them individually.

Q: What is the difference between your rotary and non-rotary Safe-T-Cable tool?

A: The most popular hand operated tool is the SCTR Series adjustable tension (rotary) tool. This tool uses a rotary tension mechanism to apply tension to the cable that meets the flex limits of AS4536. The SCT Series (non-rotary) tool applies a pre-set tension to the cable. Multiple actuations of the handle are required to draw the cable in and apply tension that meets the flex limits of AS4536. 


Q: Is there a Safe-T-Cable nose size that is more often used?

A: The size of nose depends on the users application. We offer noses in the following sizes: 3",5",7" inches.


Q:Where do I use elongated ferrules? 

A: Fasteners that have limited clearance between the safety wire hole (less than .100") and the surface of the component to which the fastener is attached. The longer reach of the ferrule will assist with installations on low profile fasterners or hard to reach locations. 


Q: What specification controls the installation of Safe-T-Cable?

A: NASM33540: is the primary Standard which controls the selection, use, and installation of Safety Wire, Safety Cable, and other Safety devices for threaded fasteners. NASM33540 is adopted for use by DoD, and is listed in the Department of Defense Index of Standards & Specifications (DODISS)


Q: Can I use a .040” nose/indenter on the Safe-T-Cable tool to crimp a .032” ferrule and cable?

A: The reason that we supply separate tools/noses for the two diameters is the placement of the cable exit hole, and the difference in the cutting function of the tool for the two diameters. When the tool mechanism moves the ferrule/cable as it reshapes the ferrule to hold the cable, it moves the tensioned cable past a cutting edge, which is the edge of the exit hole. The timing is critical to the operation and tensioning capability of the tool. Our Engineering Team placed the hole in very slightly different locations in the .032 tool/nose, as compared to the .040 model.


Q:How many bolts can be secured with Safe-T-Cable?

A: Per AS567, Unless otherwise specified in the application engineering drawing, safety cable shall be installed in two or three bolt patterns, with two bolt patterns being the preferred method when safety cable is applied to an even number of fasteners


Q: How do I properly thread the cable through the fasteners? 

A: Safe-T-Cable is to be installed in such a manner that any tendency for a fastener to loosen will be counteracted by an additional tension on the cable. The recommended practice for installation is to avoid sharp turns (in excess of 135 degrees), and thread cable with neutral to positive tension. 


Q: Can Safe-T-Cable and ferrules be reused?

A: Per NASM33540: Safety cables and safety cable ferrules shall be new upon each application. Reuse is not acceptable.



Q: Is excess cable allowed once the ferrule has been terminated?

A: After installing the safety-cable, excess cable from the crimped ferrule shall be cut off. The maximum allowable length of cable extending beyond the ferrule shall be 0.031 in. (0.79mm).


Q: How much tension should be applied to Safe-T-Cable?

A: The function of safety wire or safety cable is to stop the unintentional rotation of a fastener, should it become loose. It is not intended to add torque to the fastener. Both the pre-set and rotary tool have a pre-set amount of tension. Depending on the operator’s alignment of the ferrule to the fastener, there will be anywhere from 0 to 4 pounds (average) tension on a .032 diameter Safe-T-Cable when it is correctly installed.

Q: What lengths are available for Safe-T-Cable? 

A: 9", 12", 15", 18", 21" & 24" (Dimensions are in Inches)


Note:   18" inch length is the Most Common Length Specified.

When considering the cable length, be sure to add the extra cable required to engage the tension mechanism in the application tool: Add 8" inches for a tool with a 3" inches nose, and 12" inches for a tool with a 7" inch nose.


Q: What is the Pull Off Force of the various Safe-T-Cable sizes? 

A: .022 = 30lbs min, .032 = 70lbs min, .040 = 110lbs min, .062 = 280lbs min

Q: What is the difference between the M22520/1-01 (AF8), M22520/2-01(AFM8) and M22520/7-01(MH860)?

A: These manual indent crimp tools are all MIL-QUALIFIED, however they have different specification sheets under SAE AS22520. M22520/1-01 (AF8) accommodates wire sizes 12 throught 26 AWG, M22520/2-01 (AFM8) accommodates wire sizes 20 throught 32 AWG, and M22520/7-01 (MH860) accommodates wire sizes 16 throught 28 AWG. 


Q: Do you have a cross reference for MIL-SPEC connectors and M39029 contacts?

Q: Can you provide a tutorial on using your tools?

Q: Does DMC recommend a calibration/check interval (i.e. one or two years)?

A: DMC does not provide a "standard" timeframe for repair and calibration of tooling. Repair and calibration is unique to each user and should be based upon frequency of use, proper care of tool, internal requirements, or adherence to a QMS. DMC suggests verification of tooling on a frequent basis to ensure the tools are performing as the OEM intended. 


Q: Can we have a demonstration of your tooling at our company?

Q: When a tooling does not pass during Go/No-Go test, what is the recommendation from DMC? 

A: The tooling might be worn or in need of repair. Contact DMC immediately 407-855-6161. 


Q: What is a retention tester used for?

A: The purpose of the retention test is to verify that the operator inserted and fully seated the wired contacts. Excessive stressful force is bad, because it will damage contacts and connectors, and only enough force to move the contact out of position should be used.


Q: How do you inspect worn contacts?

A: The process of sticking a gage pin into a socket contact and measuring the force to withdraw the pin is done to test the min/max engagement force of a socket contact (there is no method to test pins). There are X and Y gage pins in the set (X is large and Y is small by 2 ten thousandths. The procedure for using these gages is defined in EIA-364-37 (Contact Engagement and Separation Forces for Electrical Connectors). That was previously MIL-STD-1344.The X Pin is used to test maximum holding/withdrawal force, and the Y Pin is used to test the Minimum force through the range of size 28 thru 4/0.


Q: Can I put a different wire gage than what’s specified for the wire barrel size?

A: Using the wrong wire AWG is a big rule breaker, and there are two situations which must be dealt with: The CMA Fill of the wire barrel and the Sealing Range of the sealing grommet on the connectors for which contacts are designated. The correct way to deal with both issues would be to use an environmental wire splice outside the connector which would allow a short jumper wire of different AWG to be joined to the proper AWG wire in your system. 


Q: Can your tools be put in a powered press?

A: All Detail Standards for Military Standard Hand tools have the following notice, and each of these documents directs the user to the appropriate powered alternative tool if a Military Standardized Powered Tool is available. NOTICE: USE OF HAND CRIMPING TOOLS COVERED BY THIS SPECIFICATION AS A COMPONENT IN ANY POWERED “PRESS” MAY VIOLATE OSHA REGULATIONS CFR 1910.211

Q: What can I use to clean DMC tools? 

A: Isopropanol99 may be used to clean/degrease the outside of DMC tools. 


Q: If I peridoically use a Go/No-Go gage for verification do I still need to calibrate the tools? 

A: Over time tools will become worn or may be in need of adjustment. Gaging is a good way to verify the tool will meet the OEM's performance expectation, however, routine calibration is always a good idea. Calibration schedules can be based on several variables: number of cycles, length of time since last calibration, damage or improper care of tools, etc. A calibration schedule should be determined by the end user to ensure quality and tool life. 


Q: Why should I use a Turret or Positioner when crimping?

A: To make sure the crimp maintains good electrical and mechanical characteristics, the position of the crimp on the contact wire barrel is important. The turret and positioner consistently positions a contact in the optimal crimp location prior to the crimp operation. 


Q: How do I request an application to be evaluated by DMC?

A: We provide a no cost evaluation for our customers to determine if we have exisitng tooling to support your applications requirements or if new tooling is needed. Please complete this form and return to DMC. 




Q: Do I need a Return of Merchandise Authorization (RMA) to return items I purchased?

A: DMC will issue a Return of Merchandise Authorization (RMA) under the following conditions:

  • Within the original 90 days of purchase for warranty repair. The item must meet DMC warranty guidelines (an exchange for same item is solely at DMC’s discretion)

  • Customer ordered the incorrect item or no longer has a need for the item.

    • The item must be unused,  undamaged and in original packaging.

    • A restocking fee will be applicable and will not be greater than the original purchase price.

    • Once the item is received at DMC, the quality control department will inspect the item to ensure it meets DMC return guidelines

    • If approval of acceptance is issued a refund or credit will be provided less any restocking fee

  • If an RMA is able to be issued, you will be provided with an RMA number that must be displayed on the outside label of the package for proper internal handling

  • Return shipping fees are not covered by DMC.

  • The RMA number issued will be valid for 30 days. You must return the item within the 30 day time period or the RMA will be cancelled.

Q: Are calibration certs available to be purchased online? 

A: Not currently, but they can be requested by completing this form


Q: What tools are calibration certs available for?
